James (Jim) Black
RINA Australian Division
I am a Strathclyde University trained naval architect and chartered professional engineer who has now lived in Australia for over forty years, working in the commercial boatbuilding and shipbuilding industries. I retired from Austal Ships in 2016 after 26 years there, covering such varied work as Project Manager, Technical Manager, Quality Manager and Service Manager, including managing the charter operation of a large High Speed Craft to the US Marine Corps for 15 years. I am President of the Australian Division of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, a member of the Australian Maritime College Industry Advisory Committee, and a member of the RINA / Engineers Australia Joint Board for Naval Architecture. Previous positions have included: founding member and secretary/treasurer of the RINA WA Section, member of the Mechanical and Materials Engineering Advisory Panel of the University of Western Australia, member of the Lloyd's Register Australian Advisory and Technical Committees, member of the DNV High Speed Light Craft Technical Forum. Previous memberships include Engineers Australia (CPEng) and the US Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
